While the literal translation of the name Mikasa is "three bamboo hats," there's also another meaning behind her name. Mikasa is a famous Japanese pre-dreadnought battleship built in the late 1890s. According to Isayama, he chose this name for the character due to his belief that a series will become successful if you name the female characters after famous warships.

Sasha Wasn't Supposed To Survive Past The 'Clash Of The Titans' Arc
Sasha Blouse, affectionately known as Potato Girl, was originally meant to pass away in Volume 9 of the manga. But because that plan literally made his editor cry, he ended scrapping the idea and letting her live after all. This plan accounts for her absence throughout most of the "Clash of the Titans" arc in the manga - the anime adaptation would give her a stronger role.
