These Funny Films Have Surprisingly Dark Twists
Vote on the movies that gave you jokes and then made your jaw drop.
Horror films might be known for their creepy twists, but every once in a while, a comedy surprises us with a dark turn of events that we didn't see coming. Whether it's revealing the skeletons in a character's closet or realizing someone has been a ghost the entire runtime, these funny films give us equal amounts of laughs and gasps.
Vote up the darkest twists in the funniest movies, and vote down the ones that only made you yawn.
The Set-Up: Advertising executive Neal and shower-curtain salesman Del are two men desperate to make it home for Thanksgiving. Along the way, Del seems to find new ways to accidentally annoy Neal. Neal admits he knows he has a big personality, but he likes the person he is, and so does his wife.
The Dark Twist: Del's wife actually died eight years prior, and Del has no home to go back to. Neal then brings Del to his family's Thanksgiving dinner.
Ha, ha... holy sh*t?The Set-Up: Aspiring singer Kate is stuck in a rut working as an elf in a year-round Christmas store. She meets a man named Tom and quickly falls in love with him, despite Tom being hard to contact. Kate reveals to Tom that one year prior, she had a heart transplant.
The Dark Twist: In a very literal interpretation of the famous 1986 Wham! song for which the film is named, Tom gave Kate his heart - because he was an organ donor. The film reveals he was a ghost the entire runtime. Merry Christmas.
Ha, ha... holy sh*t?The Set-Up: The death-obsessed Harold meets 79-year-old Maude at a stranger's funeral they both attended for fun. The two develop an unlikely romance, fueled by their mutual love of the macabre.
The Dark Twist: When Harold discovers a number tattooed on Maude's arm, he realizes she must be a Holocaust survivor. Maude takes her own life on her 80th birthday after dancing with Harold in what she called a lovely farewell.
Ha, ha... holy sh*t?The Set-Up: When he turns 21, Tim learns he can time-travel to previous moments in his own life. He uses this power in playful ways, like wooing his crush, Mary, into marrying him and having a daughter, Posy.
When Posy turns one, Tim's sister, Kit Kat, gets into a car accident while inebriated. Tim travels back in time to prevent Kit Kat from ever dating her abusive boyfriend.
The Dark Twist: Back in the present, Tim realizes Posy now doesn't exist - instead, he has a son. It's revealed that changing any event that happened prior to having a child means a different child will be born instead.
Ha, ha... holy sh*t?The Set-Up: After getting kicked out of her apartment, Gloria moves back to her hometown, where she meets up with her childhood friend, Oscar. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a Godzilla-type monster attacks the city of Seoul.
Gloria soon realizes whenever she visits a particular playground, she's actually in control of the monster.
The Dark Twist: Oscar isn't really Gloria's friend - he's a manipulative, self-loathing bully and has been since day one. When he threatens to destroy Seoul unless he gets his way, Gloria travels to Seoul, allowing her monster to pop up in her hometown's playground and throw Oscar to his death.
Ha, ha... holy sh*t?The Set-Up: Five childhood friends attempt a pub crawl in their hometown. Strangely, several people from their past don't seem to remember them.
The Dark Twist: The entire town has been replaced by androids - the first step in an alien invasion. The aliens eventually agree to leave Earth alone, but their departure creates an electromagnetic pulse that destroys the world's electrical power and kills many people in the process. Yikes.
